Customer Review: it's great, but...

I own two of these mills (CBM-18), in two different states. I had used various grinders/mills before with less than satisfying results. I bought the first CBM-18 about a year ago after reading reviews, which were generally favorable and helpful in the decision. I purchased the second one to replace a much older burr grinder that seemed to be burning the beans.
Overall, I am very pleased with the adjustable quality of the grind and the resulting coffee. At first I thought the programmable feature (number of cups to grind) was an unnecessary frill, but it is very useful and accurate. I have had no more problems with burning. I also have had no mechanical problems with either unit (yet).
Earlier reviews pointed out a problem with static cling in the plastic receiver cup that collects the grind. This is a real issue, one which is worse in a dry climate. It's mainly an annoyance that causes a bit of a mess, but it could easily be improved if Cuisinart would listen to its customers and replace the plastic cup with a glass one. My second unit also had a slight problem with the electrical plug, which was loose in the wall outlet, causing the mill to quit in the middle of a grind occasionally; this is easily fixed by spreading the prongs on the plug slightly.
In summary, if you really like coffee rich and strong this is a good unit, worth the price. It's a bit messy, as all burr grinders are (in my experience at least), but that is a minor inconvenience to put up with in return for a uniform, fine grind of your favorite beans. The earlier reviews were right on the mark, for the most part, and very helpful. Some people don't like the fact that there is no on/off switch to turn off the blue light in the control panel, but that doesn't bother me - just unplug the unit if you want a dark kitchen at night. I probably would rate the unit 4.5 stars b/c it's not perfect, but since decimals are not an option I'll round up!
