Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart CHM-5 Electronic Hand Mixer 5-Speed, WhiteCustomer Review: Including the spatula for scraping off the sides of the mixing bowl make this an even better buy. Summary: 5 Stars
One more thing for relatives to ooh and aah over at holidays without spending a mint. This is an impressive item that's all the better for not being sold by Amazon at a William & Sonoma price. Your relatives will think you waisted money on a fancy one when you could have gotten something "just as good" for much less--and then you can show off how smart you are by telling them roughly how much you actually paid for this nifty thing.
The inclusion of a spatula for scraping down the mixing bowl is an excellent touch. My wife loves it. It's such a common thing that you wouldn't think it mattered that it was included, but my wife was extremely pleased by the addition, and I have to say it influenced my decision to buy this one instead of the Kitchen-Aide.
The other things that swayed me were the price difference, and just plain elegance. This is a nice looking hand mixer at a decent price.
Does it function any better than a cheap one? Honestly, don't know. I'm sure it does just as a higher quality hand drill works better than a cheap one. There are a whole lot of reasons why that is, but I won't go into them; just want to note that it's worth paying more for something if it features a more sophisticated / more functional design.
Add that, just as described, the balance in your hand is very nice. You don't feel like you're arm wrestling with it, and this provides less stress on your wrist and forearm. I think my mom's old blender weighs about four times what this one does as well.
It's also plenty powerful even on the '1' setting. I don't know if we'll ever go to '5'. My wife adds (in Japanese): "It's typical for America to make something far more powerful than it needs to be."
Only one CON: The cord is shorter than you would naturally expect, so you might actually need an extension cord to use this in a large kitchen or one where the outlets aren't handy.
BOTTOM LINE: A hand blender being typically an idiot's gift to one's spouse, this one is the exception if she (or he) likes cooking, does it a lot, and appreciates something nicer than the basic.
The recipients of delicious cooking may also enjoy the fact that the beaters have no center posts, making it easier to lick off the whip cream, batter, or other good stuff made with this blender.
