Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker

Customer Review: So far, so good...
Summary: 4 Stars

I decided I wanted a rice cooker after reading a blog entry by the film critic Roger Ebert, in which he describes the many and varied ways to use a rice cooker; basically to cook almost anything with convenience. After reading many of the negative comments about rice cookers here on Amazon, I was wary of how well it would work, but I have to say it performs perfectly, even for brown rice. It even seems to cook a little faster than using the stove (at the very least it doesn't take any longer). The rice also tastes just fine. The steamer basket works great for vegetables, as well - no problems there. The book comes with a bunch of varied recipes and its obvious that you can experiment with these once you get the hang of it. Unfortunately, there are no listed cooking times/ratios for grains like quinoa, millet and amaranth or how to make soups/stews which would have been nice. The cooker does produce a bit of steam but it's not as bad as what I've read about some other brands (this one doesn't splatter water all over the counter, thankfully). One minor complaint, though, is that the cover doesn't fit snugly over the pot by itself; no matter how you adjust it there is a small gap on one side. Placing the steamer basket in solves this, but it doesn't seem to adversely effect cooking either way, so it's not a big deal. Anyway, I'm very pleased with the cooker so far and would definitely recommend it.

Customer Review: Cuisinart Rice Cooker
Summary: 4 Stars

It is small, compact, and works exactly as described, except that I have found that I cannot let it remain on WARM setting because the rice dries on the bottom.

Customer Review: Help Please! - Won't switch from Warm to Cook!
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been reading all the reviews and I'm not sure if anyone else has had the problem I have. I've read the operating directions but can't figure out how to turn the cooker on! It's plugged in and the WARM light automatically comes on. But every time I press the button to switch to COOK, the button pops back up and it turns back to WARM. It will not stay in the COOK position!

Please help if you have any idea what's going on with this rice cooker!

Customer Review: THE way to fix boil-over while making perfect rice
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this rice cooker for the same reason everyone else did -- the look -- and we had the same messy boil-over problem that you all had, too.

Plus, even though we always followed the cooker's directions, rice cooked up inconsistently: Sometimes it was underdone, sometimes it was burnt. We tried different types of rice, tried using the included smaller-than-one-cup measuring cup, tried adding butter... Nothing helped until we discovered the secret:

Always add water according to the directions on the rice package rather than the cooker's directions, and ALWAYS COOK RICE WITH THE STEAMING BASKET IN PLACE.

When I say "in place", I mean as though you're steaming vegetables in it: perforated end down, open end up (the "Cuisinart" logo stamped on the side of the basket should be right-side-up).

See, the glass lid doesn't fit on the nonstick cooking bowl, but the steaming basket does... And the lid fits the steaming basket perfectly. You'll have no boil-over EVER with that arrangement, and if you use exactly as much water as the rice package indicates (and never lift the lid or stir the rice while cooking), your rice will end up perfectly cooked, too.

Customer Review: Great Rice Cooker
Summary: 5 Stars

Great looking machine and cooks perfect rice every time. If you are experiencing boil over using this machine you are simply putting way too much water. Follow the instructions below for perfectly cook rice:

1. Place the desired amount of rice (any kind) in the container using the included measuring cup. (You must use the included measuring cup)

2. Fill the container with water using the water marker guide located inside the container to the appropriate level. For example, if you put 3 cups of rice in the container fill the container up w/water to the "3" water marker.

Following the steps above will produce perfectly cooked rice every time. Hope this helps.
