Customer Review: Best thermal brewer under $100
Summary: 5 Stars
Coffee brews good and strong and remains steaming hot for 1.1/2 hours or more. It is not too tall (13.1/4") to fit under my cabinets, as other makers were. It announces it's finished brewing with 5 beeps, useful if you're in another room. The carafe is thick walled and has clever lid; it opens with 1/4 turn to fill or clean, it pours coffee when tilted, without twisting it open, then shuts itself to retain heat when set down. The water reservoir includes a small replaceable internal water filter that seems to help the taste of our hard water.
It uses wedge-cone shaped filters, better than the flat basket type for saturating ground coffee with hot water thereby extracting flavor, IMO, and comes with some paper filters and a so-called "permanent" fine mesh one. The water level guide on the side of the unit is clearly marked and wide (so it won't clog as my old one did). Reviewers that complain of weak, tepid coffee may be using too much water and a cold mug. The "cup" measure in coffee makers is universally much smaller than a standard cup, about 1/2 a typical coffee mug, and 2 Tbsp beans per "cup" of water indicated on the guide makes decent brew. I preheat my mug by microwaving water in it before pouring coffee.
I have not tried the programmable brew timer. This Cuisinart unit seems to be good quality and I expect it will last years. I'm replacing a good one from Gevalia that pooped out after about 4 years of near daily use (would shut itself off mid-brew).
