Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker, White

Customer Review: Compact, beautiful and delicious.
Summary: 5 Stars

I had the ice cream attachment for my Kitchenaid, but as happened to so many people - after a while it started leaking weird blue liquid over everything.

I will say that I'm a bit of a Cuisinart fan. When I look around my kitchen, a LOT of my appliances are Cuisinart, and so far they have not disappointed me.

We read some product reviews and decided this was probably the replacement for us - but we still held out.
Finally yesterday we saw a great deal for this at Williams-Sonoma, where they sold the red model WITH an extra freezer bowl for the same price as you pay for just the ice cream maker here, so we decided to go for it.

My first impression was that the freezer bowls take up relatively little space. We have a pretty packed freezer and we still managed to squeeze both freezer bowls in with little difficulty.

The other early impression is that this ice cream maker is very elegant and pretty. I immediately made room for it on my counter, choosing to hide away other, less attractive appliances.

I left both freezer bowls to freeze overnight, then this afternoon I decided to try out some recipes. My first attempt was a recipe from the recipe booklet that came with the maker. I followed the instructions, allowing the custard to cool in the refrigerate for over two hours before attempting to freeze it. At first I was a little concerned because ten minutes into the freezing the ice cream still looked pretty liquid. However, within a few minutes after that, the ice cream got to a good consistency. Like all ice creams you make in a maker, it is at a soft consistency at the end of the freezing cycle. You do need to freeze for a few more hours to allow it to harden. The ice cream came out incredibly delicious and luxurious!

I found this ice cream maker very easy to use: it was easy to fit the pieces together and easy to clean, the opening is wide enough to pour the ice cream base without spilling a drop, and it was also very easy to incorporate add-ins, which were quickly distributed all throughout the ice cream.

I know several people here have complained that they couldn't have ice cream right away, so I will say this clearly: You have to freeze the bowls overnight, at least (it's easiest to always keep a bowl in your freezer so you can make ice cream at a moment's notice). You have to refrigerate your ice cream base for a few hours (unless it is already cold) before you can freeze it. Unless you want soft-serve ice cream, you will have to let it set for a few hours after freezing to get a good solid consistency. However - these facts are true for every inexpensive ice cream maker of this kind. There are ice cream makers out there that actually freeze their own ice cream, but those are professional ice cream makers that cost a fortune.

For the casual home user, this ice cream maker is wonderful so far.

The only thing I'm waiting to see is if it will last a while. I hope it does. I will keep this comment posted.
